Mango

Mango purée is one of Bonne's most popular products. Its popularity continues to grow, and sales of mango purée have recently broken sales records at Bonne, especially amongst our consumer customers. Mango is a delicious fruit that is also very versatile. At Bonne, we’re committed to quality ingredients for our products, and only use ingredients that meet our strict criteria. For our delicious mango purée, we prefer the high-quality, registered Colombian variety Magdalena River Mango®.

Mango is a healthy fruit rich in carotene and various antioxidants. It also contains vitamin C, potassium, magnesium and plenty of fibre. There is a huge number of mango varieties – more than 2,000 – and hundreds of different varieties are cultivated. Mangoes grow in the tropics, and it’s a popular fruit especially in Asia. Mango is also the national fruit of India. A popular Indian variety of mango is called Totapuri.

The early history of mango goes back mainly to Asia. In India, mango has been cultivated and bred for thousands of years. It was introduced to East Africa more than a thousand years ago, and it spread more widely to Africa as well as Brazil in the 16th century with Portuguese seafarers. From Brazil, mango cultivation spread to the rest of Tropical America in the 18th and 19th centuries. Tropical America is also where ingredients for Bonne's stunning orange mango purée originate from.

You can recognise a quality mango by its orange pulp.

The main raw material supplier for Bonne's mango purée is the Colombian CEA, whose premium registered Magdalena River Mango® (Magriver) guarantees the high quality and ripe mango flavour of the purée. No raw mangoes, additives or preservatives are used in Bonne's mango purée. There is also no added sugar – Bonne's purée contains 100% mango, made only from fruit harvested when ripe.

Magdalena River Mango® mango plantation in Colombia.

The Magriver variety used by Bonne is rare in that it only grows in a limited area in Barranquilla’s Magdalena River delta in northern Colombia. The soil in the area is saline. Indeed, Magdalena River Mango® has not been successfully grown in any other area. As a result, the availability of this high-quality and magnificent Magriver mango is limited. The variety is also quite new – it was created by grafting from cuttings in 2016.

The mango tree is a tropical tree species belonging to the sumac family. It grows to a height of about 10–30 metres and has a rounded top. This evergreen tree produces tasty fruits that are oval in shape and have pits inside. They are thus also called drupes, or stone fruits. Mango is a type of juicy fruit that consists of a mesocarp and a hard inner part, the endocarp, which contains the pit. Other drupes include coconut, cherry, plum, peach and apricot.

The mango fruit has a leathery, smooth and waxy skin. The skin varies in colour and often has spots of many colours. The main colours in the skin are typically green, yellow and red. The mango fruits ripen some four months after the mango tree blooms. Processed mango varieties may produce up to two harvests, although usually mangoes ripen in the tropics during the dry season when we are enjoying winter in Finland. Although most varieties only produce fruit every other year, the harvest is abundant when they do.

In Finland, whole mangoes sold in stores are usually picked raw to avoid spoilage during transport. The mango fruit thus ripens after it has been harvested. Therefore, you should be careful when using whole mangoes at home. You should consume the fruit quite quickly once it has ripened enough. There are plenty of tricks for peeling the mango and handling the pit to extract the pulp, and you can learn some with the help of internet videos, for example.
